After harassing Joe Sugarman about this for 5 years I finally have them in my possession.

They’re in terrible shape. The lighting is bad. The sound quality is bad. Not a professional recording by any stretch of the imagination.

To make matters worse, half of one of the 21 tapes was recorded-over with a TV infomercial. (yikes!)

Yes, the original recording sucked. I’m having them digitally enhanced as much as possible, but I guess none of that matters, really. It’s what’s on them that really matters. I mean, if you were to dig up collection of scrolls that contained the wisdom of the ages, you wouldn’t mind that they were a little tattered and torn, would you?

I’d go so far as to say that of my vast library of books and tapes, this is now the centerpiece.

They’re recordings of what may have been the first ever “big marketing seminar” ever conducted – and arguably one that was never surpassed.

To give you an idea of what an amazing event this was, the late owner of Victoria’s Secret sent his marketing department to Joe’s seminar back when they only had two retail stores. After the event Victoria’s Secret blossomed into a direct mail empire with shops around the country.

Joe Sugarman is a legendary direct marketer who is more entrepreneur than copywriter. He has skills and insights that make him respected by the great and good copywriters but Joe has built his reputation by selling products for himself rather than being a hired gun.

Who Is Joe Sugarman?

Joe Sugarman, once called the “Mail Order Maverick” by The New York Times, is a groundbreaker in every sense of the word. His accomplishments in marketing innovation alone give him the right to be called a legend. Now he wants to share his brilliance with the rest of the world.

He used direct marketing to get the world’s first pocket calculator into as many hands as possible. This led to the formation of the JS&A Group, Inc. which led the industry in space-age technology. Sugarman introduced the cordless phone and the digital watch and even the home computer to the public with his marketing techniques.

Sugarman also introduced the concept of using toll-free numbers to take credit card orders over the phone, which was unheard of at the time. After only one year of using toll-free numbers to process orders, thousands of other companies followed suit. This led to a revolution in the merchandising industry.

Switching gears from electronic products to sunglasses may seem like suicide, but Sugarman was up to the challenge. His direct marketing skills led to the sale of twenty million pairs of BluBlockers. How about the BluBlocker rap? One of his lasting
advertising innovations is the “man on the street.” This involved a public demonstration of the product to strangers passing by and was completely new at the time. It’s now one of the standard tricks of infomercials.

Je veux dire, si vous deviez déterrer une collection de parchemins contenant la sagesse des âges, cela ne vous dérangerait pas qu’ils soient un peu en lambeaux et déchirés, n’est-ce pas ?

J’irais jusqu’à dire que de ma vaste bibliothèque de livres et de cassettes, c’est désormais la pièce maîtresse.

Quels sont-ils?

Il s’agit d’enregistrements de ce qui a peut-être été le tout premier « grand séminaire marketing » jamais organisé – et sans doute qui n’a jamais été surpassé.

Pour vous donner une idée de l’incroyable événement que cela a été, le défunt propriétaire de Victoria’s Secret a envoyé son service marketing au séminaire de Joe à l’époque où ils n’avaient que deux magasins de détail.
